Allow me to introduce myself. You may call me Richard - I'm 17 and in 6th form. I currently have no clue about what I want to do in life, but I hope the next couple of months will open my eyes in many ways. I've started this blog so I can use my time on the internet constructively - to post writing, creative material, and generally express myself in an interesting way in more than in 140 characters you may have seen in @RushTheRhubarb - especially in 2012, probably one of the most eventful years ever (for me anyway). But anyway, things I have an interest in:
Academia - I try my best academically. I really do. But the best unfortunately doesn't always show! My strongest subjects are and have always been Classics and general languages, and I keenly pursue them. While classics is traditionally seen as an elitist subject, slowly boundaries are crumbling and classics are reaching a wider audience of students and enthusiasts - and looking at what makes them so great is of great interest to me, as well as their purpose and utility in general! Also love a bit of philosophy, literature and poetry; and I will track anything interest in this field on my blog.
Music - Any good music is worth listening to, regardless of genre. From classical to reggae, screamo to dubstep, if it there is something about it which makes it pleasing to the ear (however hard it may be to believe, then it's worth checking out, right? Ok, not always the best philosophy, but I try to give everything a chance. I take great interest in the indie folk/rock/electro scenes, and much of the music I see live is inspired by these genres. In addition I play a bit of alto sax, piano, keyboards and dabbled in the guitar, voice and accordion. I've never been drawn to the idea of actually performing and handling the limelight (apart of wild 'rock-star' fantasies) but writing and producing seems like an attractive prospect.
Culture - I've always tried to appreciate good art; as above, and having done an EPQ in Art History, I've been able to analyse art a bit more and vaguely justify opinions! I will probably look at and read the details of every single work in a gallery. Film is in a different boat to art and music lightly different to music; while a good experience is always a good experience, good screenplay and writing is vastly different to crap screenplay and writing. For this reason I value cult and noir genres amongst the highest in terms of the quality of their deliverance. But to be remembered, I tihnk any film must be slightly more profound than usual, and provide insights beyond the central plot.
Sport - I am not particularly sporty, but I enjoy watching Football, Rugby, and at the time of writing Olympic sports in addition (including, but not limited to womens' beach volleyball).
Tech - Can't claim to be an expert here either. I feel that I wouldn't go too far in the tech world without a solid grasp of maths, something which I completely and utterly lack. Basic HTML is the limit of what I can do, but who can resist the odd gadgetry gold dust?
So if you like any of these, I hope you'll keep checking back. Follow my twitter for updates and see you around.
